"I can tell the house was created by a woman - every detail is thought of and the touches are so creative. We love the thought of being so light on the land, too!" Mrs. Anne Schoendorf
"The quality is not like any other house I've lived in - it is sooooo comfortable. The building process went really smoothly, and the workers were all so polite and attentive. "Interesting, spectacular, clever, craftsman....they know their stuff and the work is very well done. Excellent job." Mr. Tony Sito
Un-edited Letter from a new owner of an Anne & Bradshaw home:
Hi Pam,
First, just a short history on how two sisters (one from NH and one from OH) end up buying a house in NC. I accompanied my sister on her third trip to Wilmington to look at houses. Her husband suggested that she should take me along to get my objective assessment of the town and the house she had looked at twice before. To that end she told me nothing about the house and did not send me the MLS so I could look it up. She did not want me to have any preconceived notions. Unbeknownst to me we were less than a block from it as we drove from the airport
to our vacation rental in Wilmington. I am sure that it was killing my sister to be so close and not go to the house! And my role is, if need be, to talk her out of thinking that this is indeed the Dream House.
The next morning we begin the day's tour of 12 houses with Princess Place Drive. I know that it is in the 2300 block. I am looking right and left wondering which one it is. I see the adorable gray-green cottage and really hope that it is the one. If it is any of the others, it will be easy to convince my sister to keep looking since there is no rush for them to buy.
When we pull into the back yard, I am really excited about looking at the house but I was not prepared to be stunned! And that is the effect that the interior has. One is expecting smallish rooms nicely done. The design of the vaulted ceilings is brilliant. The volume makes this not so big house seem much larger than it is.
There are lovely touches all through the house: the farmhouse sink, the plant-stand vanity, the dresser vanities, the light fixtures (it is too sad that the stained glass one broke), the soaker tub - just to name a few.
And we don't have to repaint since the color palette is perfect! Thank goodness no "builder beige"!
I love that this new house feels like an old house. The size of the
windows and the choice of millwork contribute to that feeling. I love the placement of the three windows in the bonus room.
And the two master bedrooms was a stroke of genius. They allow two couples to share this house without feeling like guests. Also it was very forward thinking of you to design an ADA-compliant shower. Hopefully, none of the four of us will need to use it but as someone once said, "We are all only temporarily abled."
I am thrilled to have bought an eco-friendlier house. And how cool was it that we closed on Earth Day!
The house is so aesthetically pleasing sited among the mature trees. How amazing that you were able to build it without destroying them. The style you selected fits the neighborhood perfectly. Once we get plants established along the front of the lot no one will think that it is a new build.
The color of the cement siding that you selected is certainly
appropriate for this "green" home. And thank you for selecting this type of siding. I love my wood clapboards but not the cost of
repairing and painting them. What brand is it?
I love the cut-outs in the roof of the front verandah. What a great idea to allow more light into the living room! And the cut-out in the upstairs hall gives, what could be a confining space, light and volume from the living room.
As soon as I saw the house, I knew that my sister wasn't insane for wanting to buy it. And, in fact, I actually was the one who came up with the idea of the sisters' buying it. I certainly did not blame my brother-in-law for being reluctant about buying the house without seeing it. It really turned out to be a win-win situation for all of us. Now they have a house to retire to and my husband Loren and I have a place to escape Ohio's winters.
I also want to thank you and Brad for taking the time to meet with us about the garage siting. My sister really needed to be on site to visualize its location.
Thanks for building the Dream House!
Donna
